Biography

Curtis Hertel Jr. has served as an Ingham County Commissioner since 2001. Over the years he has served in various capacities including Vice-chair of the Board and Chair of the Human Services Committee. In his time on the Commission, Curtis has focused on expanding access to health care in the community through the Ingham Health Plan, improving the quality of Ingham Counties' house stock through his work on the Ingham County Land Bank Authority, and improving the lives of workers in the community by passing the living wage.

During that same time Curtis Hertel Jr. has worked on the public's behalf for the State of Michigan. Curtis has served as Constituent Relations Director for the House Democratic Caucus. In this roll he learned many valuable lessons about public service and community involvement. For the past 6 years Curtis Hertel Jr. has worked for the Department of Community Health. Currently he serves as the Department's Legislative Liaison. In his role with the department Curtis has been lead on several packages of legislation including the governor's Childhood lead safety package, the Nursing Home background check package, and the Childhood Booster Seat package.

Currently, Curtis is a member of the following Committees and Boards: Vice Chair of the Finance committee, Member of the Human Services Committee, Member of Potter Park Zoo Board, Member of the Ingham Health Plan Board, Member of the Ingham County Land Bank, and Member of the Ingham County Agricultural Preservation Committee.

Curtis Hertel Jr. is a graduate of Michigan State University's James Madison College.

Curtis Hertel Jr. lives in East Lansing with his wife Amy, and 2 children: CJ (age 3) and Hailey (age 1).
